New EU Pesticide Approvals Threaten Europe’s Children with Long-Term Health Crisis

The European Union faces growing criticism over proposed pesticide regulation changes that children's rights organizations and UN human rights experts warn could increase long-term public-health risks. The Food and Feed Safety Omnibus, introduced in December 2025, seeks to simplify pesticide approvals and reduce administrative delays. The Council's September 2026 position supports longer approval periods, including 15 years for initial approvals and 25 years for subsequent approvals of many substances, alongside unlimited approvals for low-risk substances. Critics fear weaker routine reassessments could prolong exposure to harmful chemicals, while the European Commission maintains that safety standards will remain strong. The proposals are still under legislative consideration.
