Methane Emissions 30 Percent Reduction

Why Deep Methane Cuts Are Essential to Keeping Global Warming Well Below 2°C

A September 2026 study by ETH Zurich researchers finds that deep methane emission cuts are essential for keeping global warming well below 2°C, even if the world reaches net-zero carbon dioxide emissions. Published in Communications Earth & Environment, the research shows that reducing methane by approximately one-third could prevent around 0.15°C of peak warming. It highlights major opportunities to limit methane pollution from oil and gas operations, agriculture and waste management. With the Global Methane Pledge targeting a 30% reduction by 2030, the findings underscore the need for measurable methane-specific targets, stronger regulations and faster climate action alongside carbon dioxide reductions.
