From Early Grants to Orbit: How the EU Helped Build ICEYE into a Space Powerhouse
European Union research funding helped Finnish space technology company ICEYE develop from a university-linked startup into a global leader in satellite radar imaging. Founded by Rafał Modrzewski and Pekka Laurila, ICEYE received approximately €2.43 million through Horizon 2020 to advance compact synthetic aperture radar technology. The company launched its first satellite, ICEYE-X1, in January 2018 and reported 76 successful satellite launches by July 2026. Today, its technology supports flood monitoring, wildfire response, insurance, environmental observation and national security. The European Commission highlighted ICEYE's achievements in September 2026 as an example of successful European innovation and entrepreneurship.
